Container Apps revisions

Deploy applications to Azure Container Apps, including environment configuration and revision management

Revision-scope changes create a new ; application-scope settings do not. Use multiple revisions to split traffic safely.

Deploy into an environment

Azure Container Apps revision scope versus application scope, with an 80/20 traffic split between two active revisions.

A is the boundary for networking and log destinations. Deploy the image, ingress settings, target port, environment variables, and scale configuration as part of the app.

az containerapp create --name orders-api --resource-group rg-shop \
  --environment env-shop --image shopreg.azurecr.io/shop/orders-api:b4821 \
  --ingress external --target-port 8000

Know which changes make revisions

Image, container resources, environment variables, and are template settings, so changing them creates a new immutable . Secrets, ingress, revision mode, and traffic weights are application settings and do not create one.

Roll out with traffic

Single revision mode keeps the previous revision serving until the replacement is ready. Multiple revision mode lets several revisions stay active so you can test a new one before shifting traffic.

az containerapp ingress traffic set --name orders-api --resource-group rg-shop \
  --revision-weight orders-api--v1=80 orders-api--v2=20

Refresh changed secrets

Changing a secret alone does not restart existing replicas. Restart the revision or deploy a new revision when the process must read the new value.

Key points

  • Environment: apps share networking and a log destination inside the boundary
  • scope: image, resources, environment variables,
  • Application scope: secrets, ingress, revision mode, traffic weights
  • Single mode: previous revision serves until replacement is ready
  • Multiple mode: keep revisions active and split traffic between them
  • Secret changes: restart or create a revision to refresh running processes

Exam trap

Changing a secret does not create a , and running replicas keep the old value until the revision restarts or a new revision is deployed.
