Create a connection
Create a data connection
Create reusable Fabric connections for cloud or private-network sources, configure authentication, and share them with the right role.
The core idea

A Fabric connection stores where the source lives and how Fabric authenticates. Cloud sources use a cloud connection. Private-network sources first need an .
Authentication methods vary by connector, but authentication and network reachability solve different problems.
Connections are reusable across supported items such as pipelines and dataflows. Share them carefully because recipients can use the stored connection configuration.
Key points
- Cloud: create a cloud connection for internet-reachable sources
- On-premises: install a gateway before creating the connection
- Authentication: controls sign-in, not network reachability
- Sharing: User, resharing, and Owner control connection use

Exam trap
Authentication does not solve network reachability. Private-network sources still need a configured gateway or another supported private connection path.
