Genie instructions
Configure AI/BI Genie instructions for data discovery
Improve Genie discovery by curating metadata, business semantics, verified examples, and concise global instructions.
Start with structured context
- Text instructionsGlobal context and terminology
- SQL examplesVerified analysis patterns
- SQL expressionsReusable business logic
- MetadataTables, columns, joins, and descriptions
Strong metadata and structured semantics should carry definitions wherever possible. Free-text instructions are for concise guidance that does not fit better elsewhere.
See instructions in the product

Instructions are persistent context, not a replacement for governed metadata. Keep them specific, unambiguous and broadly applicable.
Teach with the strongest signal
- Table or column meaningMetadata description
- Reusable metric or filterSQL expression
- Common correct query patternVerified SQL example
- Global terminology or guidanceText instruction
Do not use instructions to grant access, configure compute, or store credentials.
Key points
- Descriptions: Clarify table and column meaning
- Examples: Teach common questions with verified SQL
- SQL expressions: Encode reusable business metrics
- Text instructions: Reserve for global context and terminology
Exam trap
Do not bury metric definitions in long free-text instructions when a structured SQL expression fits better.
