Clustering strategy
Design and implement a clustering strategy, including liquid clustering and Z-ordering
Use liquid clustering for adaptable data layout; use Z-order only for older compatible patterns that are not liquid clustered.
Choose layout from query behavior
- New table needs adaptable pruningLiquid clustering
- Existing non-liquid table benefits from co-locationZ-ordering
- No selective filtering pattern existsKeep layout simple
Clustering improves data skipping by placing related values together.
Prefer liquid clustering for new tables
Liquid clustering
- Modern default
- Yes
- Keys can evolve
- Yes
- Use together
- No
Z-order
- Modern default
- Legacy pattern
- Keys can evolve
- Re-run with chosen columns
- Use together
- No
Choose clustering keys from frequent selective filters, not from business importance alone.
Do not combine strategies
A liquid-clustered table should not also receive ZORDER.
Key points
- Liquid clustering: Organizes data by clustering keys
- Adaptive keys: Can change without rewriting existing data immediately
- Z-order: Co-locates values for data skipping
- Compatibility: Liquid clustering and Z-order are not used together
Exam trap
Do not combine ZORDER with a table that uses liquid clustering.
