Basic statistical functions
Use basic statistical functions
Use statistical functions for medians, spread, percentiles, and ranking.
Pick the statistic for the question

Median Order Value = MEDIAN(Orders[Amount])
Product Rank = RANKX(ALL(Products), [Total Sales])
The function depends on what you are describing: center, spread, percentile, or rank.
Direct function or iterator?
Functions such as operate directly on a column. Functions ending in X, such as or , evaluate an expression over rows of a table first.
- 1Existing numeric columnUse a direct statistic such as
- 2Expression per rowUse an iterator such as
- 3Compare positionUse over the comparison set
Population, sample, and ranking context
Use when the data represents the whole population and when it is a sample. RANKX often needs ALL when the rank should compare against the full set rather than the current filtered row.
Exam clue: first identify the statistic, then the evaluation set.
Key points
- : middle value of a column
- : median of a row expression
- versus : population versus sample
- : ranks an expression across a table

Exam trap
without ALL may rank only within the visual's current filtered rows.
